Tariq Mirza leads Grant Thornton’s Regulatory Center of Excellence and Compliance Risk Advisory Services. He specializes in bank regulatory and management consulting services across the country with nearly 30 years of financial services experience. Tariq’s expertise includes preparing financial institutions for regulatory examinations, enforcement actions, strategy, financial controls, business change, interpreting new regulations, and developing policies and procedures. He has worked extensively with financial institutions on compliance and risk management issues such as:

Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Tariq served in various roles at the FDIC for 21+ years including numerous high profile leadership roles such as Senior Advisor – Office of the Chairman at the FDIC from 2008 to 2011. Previously, Tariq served as Acting Chief – Compliance Policy and Examinations, Acting Deputy Regional Director, Field Supervisor – Compliance, and led numerous corporate-wide strategic initiatives and special projects. From 2002 to 2008, Tariq managed the FDIC’s Pacific Northwest Territory and supervised a team of bank examiners.

 

During his distinguished career at the FDIC, Tariq was directly involved in countless regulatory examinations, including compliance/consumer protection, risk management/safety & soundness, BSA/AML/OFAC, fair lending, CRA, trust, UDAP, and information security/privacy.  He has conducted risk assessments, including credit risk, market risk, liquidity risk, compliance risk, and capital adequacy at countless financial institutions throughout the U.S.  Tariq has extensive experience handling compliance and consumer protection and issues such as UDAAP, fair lending, ECOA, FCRA, Flood Insurance, HMDA, RESPA., SCRA, TILA, TISA, EFTA/Regulation E, Privacy, as well as various risk regulations such as the FRB’s Regulation O, Regulation W, and Sections 23A/23B. In addition, Tariq helped lead the development and implementation of the FDIC Loan Modification Program at IndyMac Federal, which served as the national model for HAMP and other systemic loan modification programs.  

 

Since joining Grant Thornton, Tariq has played a key role in engagements involving some of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. and globally. Tariq has advised clients with regulatory enforcement action remediation involving BSA/AML/OFAC, mortgage lending and servicing, risk management, foreign exchange, credit cards, prepaid cards, information security and privacy, third party risk management and UDAAP.  Further, Tariq serves as a faculty member at Grant Thornton’s Advisory University and he has provided training to compliance professionals, executive management and Board members since joining Grant Thornton. He speaks regularly at conferences and public forums.
